Mr Sipp, Princes St Gardens Spiegeltent, Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival

Energy, virtuosity, charisma and sheer bloody joy.  A crowd pleaser and rouser from the off, Sipp soon has everyone clapping and singing along, and shouting back 'Yeah' at his prompting.  A sweet tenor voice and great blues guitar playing full of imagination and the unexpected.  Yet also a man of few words, with song introductions minimalist or non existent, with just the odd reference to some of his heroes like BB King, Hendrix, Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry when he performed their work.

Behind him a solid, stolid rhythm section of drums and bass, who look to be little more than backdrop to the lead performer, and gradually reveal themselves to be so much more.  Some great Motown-style backing vocals, outstanding bass solos, a decent drum solo, and the bassist joining Sipp in dance routines.

It's a very physical performance from Sipp, in constant movement across the stage, into and through the audience, a contagious grin ever present.  The lyrics might be simple, but the beat is primeval, the playing inspiring.Hugely entertaining.
