The California Feetwarmers, Princes St Gardens Spiegeltent, Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival

"Last night's gig went a little too well...."

A line that appeared half way through the gig and did much to explain their smile-less lacklustre appearance.  This was a hangover performance.

A shame, because it was clear, as the fog gradually dispersed from their beings, that they play well and have some entertaining personalities in the lineup.  Classic 20's jazz, Bix Biederbecke and New Orleans, old standards and some original compositions.  Seven young musicians, instruments appropriate to the period including tuba providing the bass element, and a bit of washboard for variety.

It's a familiar formula, but if delivered with panache it can be very entertaining.  There were some decent solos, notably from trombone and banjo, and a range of vocalists, but the panache element was sorely lacking.  They're probably a much better package when not in recovery mode....
